Understanding the Condition

The Silent Thief of Sight

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, typically due to elevated intraocular pressure. It usually develops slowly and painlessly many patients lose significant peripheral vision before seeking treatment. Early detection through regular screening is the only reliable protection.

What CAuses Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a complex eye condition with no single confirmed cause, though research suggests it may be inherited and can run in families. It is often associated with increased intraocular pressure caused by a buildup of fluid in the eye, which may result from a blockage in the eye’s drainage channels. However, the condition is not always linked to high pressurev some people develop optic nerve damage without elevated pressure, while others with high pressure never develop glaucoma. Because of this uncertainty and its often subtle progression, regular comprehensive eye exams, including optic nerve evaluation, are essential for early detection and management.

How Is Glaucoma Diagnosed?

To diagnose glaucoma, an ophthalmologist conducts a thorough consultation that includes reviewing your medical history along with a comprehensive eye examination. During this exam, several quick and painless tests may be performed to assess eye health and detect any signs of glaucoma. The results are recorded, and images may be taken to allow for comparison over time.

Your Care Journey

Screening & diagnosis

Intraocular pressure measurement, optic nerve imaging (OCT), and visual field testing to confirm the diagnosis and stage of glaucoma.

Medical management

First-line treatment with prescription eye drops to lower intraocular pressure. Regular monitoring is essential to assess response.

Laser treatment

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) improves drainage from the eye and can reduce dependence on eye drops. Minimally invasive outpatient procedure.

Surgical options

For cases not controlled by drops or laser, surgical options including trabeculectomy and valve implants provide longer-term pressure control.
