Understanding the Condition
Why Children's Eye Care Is Different
Children rarely complain about vision problems because they don't know what "normal" looks like. Many eye conditions in children including lazy eye, squint, and congenital cataracts are far more successfully treated when identified early. We recommend a first eye exam for all children at age 3–4.
How is it done?
It is performed by specialists trained to examine young patients using child-friendly techniques, such as visual tracking, light response tests, and age-appropriate vision charts. In some cases, sedation or anesthesia may be used to allow for a more detailed examination, especially in very young or uncooperative children. Treatment can include prescribing glasses, managing conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye misalignment), and performing delicate surgeries when necessary, all with the goal of ensuring proper visual development and preventing long-term vision problems.
How Is it Diagnosed?
Paediatric ophthalmology conditions are diagnosed through a combination of observation, specialized eye tests, and medical history, all adapted to the child’s age and level of cooperation. The specialist begins by assessing how the child responds to light, tracks objects, or recognizes shapes and symbols using age-appropriate vision charts. They may also examine eye alignment, movement, and focus to detect issues like Strabismus or Amblyopia. Instruments such as ophthalmoscopes and slit lamps are used to inspect the internal structures of the eye, while drops may be applied to dilate the pupils for a clearer view. In some cases, especially with infants or very young children, imaging tests or examinations under mild sedation are done to ensure an accurate and thorough diagnosis.
